Vic: Couple critical, pilot airlifted after crash

An elderly couple are in a critical condition in hospital after a light plane crash
near Shepparton in northern Victoria earlier today.

An ambulance spokesman says he believes the couple, in their 70s, were passengers in
the aircraft.

Both have been taken to Goulburn Valley Base Hospital with multiple injuries.

A man thought to be the pilot was trapped for 90 minutes in the wreckage before he
was airlifted to the Alfred Hospital Trauma Centre in Melbourne.

Police say the plane appeared to crash land near the runway at Shepparton Airport at
around 12.20pm (AEST).

No cause for the crash has been given, but a team of investigators from the Australian
Transport Safety Bureau in Canberra is on its way to the crash site.
