SA:Support pours in for ABC amid chopper fears

ADELAIDE, Aug 19 AAP - The ABC is being overwhelmed by support as it braces for official
confirmation of the deaths of three members of a news team in a helicopter crash in South
Australia.

Pilot Gary Ticehurst, reporter Paul Lockyer and cameraman John Bean are missing and
presumed dead in the Lake Eyre region.

ABC head of news gathering Don Lange said support was pouring in from around the world.

"We have been overwhelmed by support from both within this organisation and the industry,
and correspondents from across the world who have worked with Paul and Gary and John have
been calling all night and this morning."

The experienced news trio were filming a third documentary of Lake Eyre filling up with water.

"This is the second year in a row the three have gone up to Lake Eyre to do this project,
and they had a lot of fun out there in the bush camping under the stars," Lange said.

"In fact Gary rang only a couple of days ago and said there was just this magical carpet
of stars up in the sky.

"You know they worked incredibly hard on these trips but it was a lot of fun as well."

The ABC said Lockyer was one of its most experienced journalists.

"Paul in particular was one of the most popular reporters in the ABC he had a fantastic
way with people and that was one of his great strengths," Lange said.

"Humility is not a great quality in this industry but Paul had it in bucket loads,
and he was just a marvellous self-effacing individual, I have never heard anyone who had
a bad word to say about him.

"Perhaps Paul and Gary's highlight was in Grantham last year where they were able to
get into the Lockyer Valley a day before the authorities and Paul was able to speak to
people and get their stories in a gentle, understanding way and the public have responded
accordingly."

He said Ticehurst, one of the most experienced media pilots in Australia, loved flying
had covered 29 Sydney to Hobart yacht races, five or six with Lange.

"His flying skill is just unbelievable, you could be flying in a gale backwards tracking
a yacht through the sea 10 or 15 miles offshore."

"He was a classic pilot, years ago he used to have the big walrus moustache and a flock
of silver hair, a very dashing guy."

He said Bean was an award-winning cameraman, a "terrific bloke" who had worked for
all the ABC programs.

Eyewitnesses have described seeing the chopper going down in flames, although it remains
unclear what caused the accident.

Police have confirmed that two people are dead and are searching for the third person
believed to have been in the helicopter.

They are due to hold a press conference in Adelaide at 11.30 (CST).

The weather around Lake Eyre was clear at the time of the crash, with just a few scattered
showers.

William Creek pilot Trevor Wright told Adelaidenow.com.au the occupants of the helicopter
had been due to meet a group on the edge of the lake for dinner.

"When the helicopter didn't turn up, they became anxious and sent out a search party
on foot; they found the wreck," Mr Wright said.

In a career spanning more than 40 years, Lockyer has worked as a correspondent in Washington,
Singapore and throughout Asia and won a Logie Award for best TV reporter.

Bean, who is married to an ABC staff member in Brisbane, has worked for the 7.30 Report,
Catalyst, the New Inventors and Gardening Australia in his 20-year career with the broadcaster.

Ticehurst has close to 40 years of helicopter operational experience, which includes
30 years as chief pilot of Film Helicopters Australia, working with the Australian film
and television industry.

FED:Aussie troops gain vital warning of attack

By Max Blenkin, AAP Defence Correspondent

CANBERRA, Feb 1 AAP - Australian troops in Afghanistan will now have extra, possibly
even lifesaving, seconds to seek shelter from Taliban mortar attacks.

A new radar warning system, designed to detect projectiles fired by insurgents then
sound an alert siren, is now operational at the main Australian and coalition base at
Tarin Kowt.

Defence Materiel Minister Jason Clare said the system is five months ahead of schedule
and has already provided warning of two Taliban attacks.

It replaces equipment previously provided by the Singapore Armed Forces.

"An extra few seconds can be all the difference between life and death," he told reporters.

The system comprises a leased SAAB Giraffe radar on an extendable mast, a linked command
and control system plus a number of lightweight counter-mortar radars.

Under an $86 million contract with SAAB, defence will eventually buy three Giraffe
systems. Warning systems will be progressively deployed to other patrol bases.

Mr Clare said Australian troops heading into Afghanistan later this year would also
be equipped with new combat body armour.

He said that was being produced by the firm Australian Defence Apparel and was lighter
and more comfortable than older body armour. The 3rd Mentoring Task Force, which heads
into Afghanistan in mid-year, will be issued this new equipment.

Defence Minister Stephen Smith said C-RAM was one of 48 recommendations for better
protection of troops in Afghanistan contained in a force protection review conducted in
2009.

The government gave the go-ahead to these measures at an all-up cost of $1.6 billion.

Mr Smith said 40 recommendations had been either completed or were on track, six were
subject to monitoring and it been decided two would not proceed as they were not technically
feasible at this time.

Opposition defence spokesman David Johnston said Private Greg Sher was killed in a
Taliban rocket attack in 2009 while last year rockets landed on either side of the Tarin
Kowt base.

"It was more a case of good luck than good management that none of our troops were
injured or killed," he said in a statement.

Senator Johnston said he raised the delayed purchase of C-RAM in Senate question time
in August 2009 and the government admitted it wasn't planned for another nine years.

"The acquisition of C-RAM is better late than never and it will perform a vital role
in the safety of our troops but the protracted delay has been completely inexcusable,"

he said.

FED:Editorials, Wednesday, August 25, 2010

AAP General News (Australia)
08-25-2010
FED:Editorials, Wednesday, August 25, 2010

SYDNEY, Aug 25 AAP - On Wednesday The Australian says when Julia Gillard suggested
that Townsville pie eaters should not have to pay for their sauce, it became a quirky
item on the evening news.

But the Prime Minister's populist economics deserves further examination. One day it's
pies, the next it's the $43 billion National Broadband Network emerging as a potential
deal-maker in Labor's efforts to form government. The NBN is the sauce of telecommunications,
the bonus you get when you don't have to worry too much about the cost. But just as with
so-called free sauce, Australians will end up paying even if they don't want high-speed
broadband, their taxes cross-subsidising the NBN for sectors, such as business, that should
pay themselves.

Labor has shown in the past that it's more interested in slicing the pie rather than
growing it. The independents should also remember that no matter how you slice it, there
is no such thing as a free pie, with or without the sauce.

Today's Sydney Morning Herald today asks does the NSW disease make federal Labor unfit
to govern? We believe not - or at least, not yet. Tony Abbott has yet to show that he,
too, is driven by more than polls, or stands for anything beyond slogans. His sudden,
indeed miraculous conversion to kinder, gentler politics yesterday suggests quite the
opposite. Meanwhile, Labor in other states remains less affected by the NSW disease. Julia
Gillard quite possibly understands now that the disease keeps infected governments sickly
and feeble. If she does indeed form a government she will have to act quickly to quarantine
herself from it. Closing her door more often to the NSW Right would be a healthy first
step.

In its second editorial the SMH says the idea has got about that the world is sick
of Pakistan and reluctant to help the 20 million of its 175 million people affected by
the floods. This is contrasted with the response to the 2005 earthquake on Pakistan's
side of Kashmir, when $US5 billion in foreign help quickly started flowing, US helicopters
came over from Afghanistan, and India opened border crossings for aid convoys.

Hobbled by the global financial crisis, rich countries are indeed more stingy. But
if the world is to mount more than a relief operation it is not only money that is needed
to make Pakistan more robust and win hearts and minds too.

Sydney's The Daily Telegraph on Wednesday says OPPOSITION leader Tony Abbott yesterday
presented his claim to become the next Prime Minister of Australia. And it was an impressively
straightforward statement - light on obvious political spin and catchphrases but containing
several winning points.

As Abbott has repeatedly indicated, and as he again indicated yesterday, the Coalition
received nearly 500,000 more primary votes in this election than did the Labor Party.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has sought to minimise the significance of this, pointing
out that Labor narrowly won (judging by counting thus far) on voting after preferences
were taken into consideration.

As we enter the fourth day of Australia's post-election deadlock, citizens (and certain
independent political candidates) have much to ponder in Abbott's words.

In its second editorial the Tele says the State Government's promise to replace dodgy
and noxious school heaters must be among the lamest promises in Australian political history.

Cabinet sources have now revealed that it will take up to 15 years for all the heaters
to be replaced with more modern units.

Yes, 15 whole years.

The Tele's third editorial says at a federal level, we've got no government. At a local
level, we've got too much of it. We're all for an active and involved Sydney City Council
but it wouldn't hurt Clover Moore if she just gave it a rest once in a while.

Ben Cousins' documentary on his battle with drug addiction is a lesson for everyone,
the main editorial in the Herald Sun newspaper said on Wednesday.

"Tonight, Such is Life - the Troubled Times of Ben Cousins airs on Channel Seven and
parents have been warned that images of the Brownlow medallist at the lowest point of
his addiction could be too much for children," the editorial said.

"Youth workers suggest parents watch the documentary in the company of their teenage
children, and be prepared for some tough questions.

"Drug addiction is a scourge on individuals, families and the community. Whether the
tell-all documentary should be seen by young children is a matter for their parents or
guardians.

"Let us hope the dominant message to everyone is that drugs can ruin lives."

The state election, and not good rainfall, was the catalyst for the Victorian government's
decision to ease Melbourne's water restrictions, the main editorial in The Age newspaper
said on wednesday.

Stage three water restrictions will be eased to stage two from September 1, allowing
Melburnians to water their gardens with hoses at any time and to wash their cars at home
for the first time since 2006.

"If the past 13 years should have taught us anything, it is that one wet winter does
not end the drought.

"Until this year, the average annual inflow to Melbourne water catchments since 1997,
when it fell to a third of 1996 levels, was 376 gigalitres, 61 per cent of the average
of 615 gigalitres from 1913 to 1996.

"Despite that ominous trend, the state government has consistently delayed tougher
water restrictions as long as possible and eased restrictions as soon as it could.

"Particularly as the time to face voters approaches, the Bracks-Brumby government has
adopted a glass-almost-half-full mentality, and this year is no exception.

"Premier John Brumby has twice announced an easing of restrictions this year: the politically
contrived stage 3A to stage three in March and ow stage two from September 1.

"The government has taken a punt that the recent trend will continue. After it expediently
dumped its 2006 election policies on water, voters are entitled to feel cynical about
its latest pre-election moves."

Brisbane's The Courier Mail today says make no mistake, the fallout from Saturday's
extraordinary election result will not be limited to Canberra. Queensland voters comprehensively
rejected the Labor brand in both its federal and state incarnations, and that has left
the Bligh Government, and its approach to too many issues, exposed. By Premier Anna Bligh's
own admission, the result was devastating for Labor in Queensland. What to do?

NSW: Jobs key to preventing homelessness, Turnbull says

SYDNEY, Dec 21 AAP - Keeping Australians in work is the best defence against homelessness,
federal Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull says.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd launched a white paper on homelessness on Sunday, with a
pledge of $1.2 billion over four years to build new housing and increase prevention services.

Mr Turnbull said the causes of homelessness were complex, but an avoidable one was unemployment.

He said many Australians were facing a tough year and it was vital employment remained high.

"What we don't want to see is people losing their homes because they are losing their
jobs," he told reporters in Sydney on Sunday.

"A secure job, a secure income, is the best proof against homelessness."

Mr Turnbull said every focus of the federal government had to be directed towards the
economy, which would also be the coalition's focus.

"We think this is clearly a growing challenge in Australia and it's one that we're
all committed to providing more resources to and more effective solutions," he said.

"Everything we are focused on, every policy we will be preparing, every criticism we
will be making will be directed towards ensuring our economy remains strong and Australians
remain in work."

Mr Turnbull said the measures had all been announced at the Council of Australian Governments
(COAG) meeting some weeks ago, with bipartisan support from the coalition.

"These are all measures without exception that were announced earlier in the year,
there's no new announcement, no new money," he said.

"We supported it when it was announced and we support it again today."

Fed: Union says reducing tariffs makes no sense at all

CANBERRA, Aug 15 AAP - Reducing tariffs on Australian-made passenger cars does not
make any sense, the union representing manufacturing industry workers says.

The Bracks car industry review, released publicly today, recommends reducing tariffs
on passenger motor vehicles from 10 per cent to five per cent by 2010.

The Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union said no other vehicle-building country
in the world was considering lowering tariffs on their locally-made cars.

"We need to understand that Steve Bracks made his recommendations prior to the collapse
of Doha (round of world trade talks)," national secretary Dave Oliver said.

"It makes no sense at all, given Doha (the collapse of world trade talks), the global
financial crisis and the issue of climate change to consider reducing tariffs.

"China, India, Malaysia are not doing it and neither are Canada and the European Union."

The union did welcome other aspects of the review, saying it was good to have a plan
for the automotive industry especially at a time when there was a government supportive
of the manufacturing sector.

Vic: Woman's fantasies lead to blackmail, extortion charges

MELBOURNE, Dec 4 AAP - A woman who extorted more than $126,000 from relatives in a
scheme involving fictitious bikies and an imaginary police detective suffered from a condition
called mythomania, a Melbourne court has been told.

Debra Lee Bassani, of Frankston, today pleaded guilty in the Victorian County Court
to one count of blackmail, five counts of stalking and three counts of extortion.

Bassani told her de facto husband and his two brothers that a bikie gang was after
their family, the court was told.

The 39-year-old based her story around fictitious threats from the gang over a soured
rental agreement.

She falsely claimed her father was a detective who could keep them safe as long as
they paid him protection money.

Three families, including Bassani, lived in fear and on the run in cabins and caravan
parks around Victoria during the extortion plot which ran from January last year until
February this year.

Her lawyer, David McKenzie, told the court his client suffered from a condition that
led to her creating fantasies and then acting them out.

"This lady suffers from a condition known as mythomania," Mr McKenzie told the court.

"It is a disorder which makes it an order that she tell and creates fantastic stories.

"It has been in her maternal family, her grandmother had the disorder."

Fed: Norfolk Island's governance to remain unchanged

CANBERRA, Dec 20 AAP - Norfolk Island's governance will remain unchanged despite months
of tense negotiations between Canberra and the Pacific island.

Territories Minister Jim Lloyd made the announcement today, saying any changes to the
island's government could harm the fragile economy.

"The government has taken account of the efforts of the Norfolk Island government to
increase revenue and to promote the growth of tourism to the island," Mr Lloyd said in
a statement.

Norfolk Island is an Australian territory with a government which raises revenue under
its own system of laws, mainly from such sources as customs duty, liquor sales, departure
fees and a financial institutions levy.

The backflip on possible reforms comes after Mr Lloyd said earlier this year that Norfolk
Island could not govern itself.

"An independent financial assessment by Acumen Alliance concluded that the Norfolk
Island government would probably become insolvent within the space of two years," Mr Lloyd
said in February.

"The Australian government has now concluded that the current arrangements are unsustainable
and that an alternative is needed."

Mr Lloyd now says any changes would not be in the interests of Norfolk Islanders.

"This would not be in the interests of Norfolk Island at this time as the islands government
works to build a long term future for its community," Mr Lloyd said.

"The Australian government has accepted the assurances of the Norfolk Island government
that it will continue its program of economic and financial reform and that it will seek
to improve the transparency and accountability of governance on the island."

NT: Traps could slow cane toad march: NT govt

AAP General News (Australia)

NT: Traps could slow cane toad march: NT govt

DARWIN, Feb 16 AAP - The Northern Territory is stepping up its war on deadly cane toads
as they close in on Darwin.

Parks and Wildlife Minister Chris Burns today announced a $422,000 grant to community-based
Frogwatch, to help set supertraps to slow the toads' march north.

The warty creatures are expected to arrive in Darwin this wet season.

"The focus of the Frogwatch grant will be what they're calling `toad musters'," Mr Burns said.

"They've trialled a supertrap that's shown itself to be fairly effective in reducing
toad numbers, particularly in sensitive areas."

The government hopes the traps, which show a 90 per cent success rate, will slow the
cane toad's spread.

"As we come into dry season now, the toad numbers will concentrate around existing
waterways and billabongs," Mr Burns said.

"I think Frogwatch intend to set the traps around there and really give the toads a
pasting around those strategic areas.

"It's like a war. It has to be fought strategically."

Cane toads have spread across Australia from Queensland, where they were introduced
in the 1930s to kill pest in the cane fields, to northern NSW, and into the NT.

They have decimated wildlife - particularly goannas, snakes and other reptiles - which
die after eating the poisonous toads.

The grant brings the NT government's fight against the toads' to $1.1 million.

It has written to the federal government asking that it match today's grant.

IntelliSeek Announces Intelli-Quotient -- A New Way to Improve Competitiveness.

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 15, 1999--

Today at Spring Internet World, IntelliSeek announced a new service that helps corporations improve their competitiveness.

The new service is called Intelli-Quotient(TM). It involves studying the information needs of a high performance work group (senior managers, service specialists, product marketers, etc.), designing an on-going means for meeting those information requirements with the Internet, and then implementing that information strategy using BullsEye(TM) -- an award-winning search program.

"Information overload is a real problem in corporations today," stated Mahendra Vora, CEO of IntelliSeek. "People are being inundated with irrelevant, general, and stale information. The Internet is accelerating and compounding this problem. What one needs to make truly informed decisions is a way to cut through the mounds of unfiltered stuff on the Internet, and automate the process of keeping up with it."

Intelli-Quotient(TM) is designed to do just that. It is a customized, targeted approach to acquiring Internet information. It allows people to stay in touch with customers, keep an eye on competitors, and receive just what is necessary to make critical decisions in this quickly changing world.

The IQ process occurs over a short two to three week timeframe. It starts with a study of an organization's critical success factors and the external information required to execute those effectively. Next, IntelliSeek, with its knowledge of both the visible and invisible web sources, designs a series of automated customized, periodic searches that will bring just the right information to each team member's desktop at just the right time. These searches are tested and fine-tuned to insure their relevancy and then distributed to each team member's BullsEye software..

"The end result is a new level of relevancy to web information," according to Linda Alepin, Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "In this case, less is more. At the end of the Intelli-Quotient process, people will be receiving precisely what they need from the Internet and intranets. More importantly, with BullsEye's unique tracking capability, corporations stay connected to the relevant new information as it becomes available on an ongoing basis. IQ program is designed and focused to increase the Knowledge Equity of a dynamic corporation."

Intelli-Quotient, as a service-based product, is a departure from the past for IntelliSeek. "Up to this point, we have looked like a product company. Over the next few months you will see our name become synonymous with the best in Internet search technologies and services," said Mahendra Vora. "We will become an important partner to complementary portals, device manufacturers, web service providers, systems integrators and many others. What we have introduced so far is just the tip of the iceberg. Our three years of hard work in the development laboratories is about to pay off in a flurry of significant announcements."

Life seen through a distorted lens; FICTION An intelligent, engaging novel about a deeply obscure rock musician and his troubled, devoted sister.(VARIETY)

Byline: DYLAN HICKS

Special to the Star Tribune

Dana Spiotta won deserved praise for her 2006 novel, "Eat the Document," a morally complex book centered on two Vietnam-era radicals, one of whose offspring favors the sort of hard-to-find rock albums that turn fans into evangelists, spreading the word along with homemade tapes (though not too far, the work's obscurity being part of the fun). Spiotta's new novel, "Stone Arabia," concerns an eccentric rocker whose would-be cult favorites can't claim a proper cult. Nik Worth enjoyed modest success on the L.A. late-'70s club scene, and has since made dozens of home-recorded, self-released albums. His audience could now be counted with one mittened hand.

The book is mainly set in the first half of 2004, as Nik approaches 50, the years betraying his open-door policy toward drugs and alcohol. He nevertheless soldiers on obsessively and without self-pity, documenting his anti-career in "The Chronicles," an extensive series of scrapbooks containing self-authored (though not always self-aggrandizing) reviews, notes and scholarship in which Nik is a reclusive, million-selling legend.

Denise is Nik's younger sister, a divorcee with a pleasant but loveless new relationship, a dull job, a mother in rapid mental decline and a growing debt to match her growing tearfulness. For decades she's been Nik's biggest fan. To her, Nik is closer to an unsung genius than an undeterred also-ran, and her emotional and financial support is steadfast despite her brother's narcissism and dissipation.

"Stone Arabia" includes excerpts from Nik's Chronicles, but most of the book is told from Denise's vantage -- both in the first and third person, with some abrupt transitions between the two. Besides being increasingly worried about (and exhausted with) Nik, Denise is experiencing what she calls "breaking events," times in which, as she puts is, she "can't quite negotiate the border between myself and the world around me." Mostly this means she becomes obsessed with news stories. It might be a sordid human-interest story, or it might be Abu Ghraib, but either way she takes on "an unhealthy correlative feeling of suffering," and fears she has "become a person whose deepest emotional moments happened vicariously."

Most everyone in this book is experiencing life at one remove or seeing it through a distorted lens: Nik has his elaborate fantasy life, Denise her medicated anxiety, their mother her probable dementia. Though the book takes place before the rise of Facebook, it speaks well to the variously phony lives many of us lead on the Internet.

This is a looser novel than "Eat the Document." That book's secrets weren't hard to guess, but Spiotta kept one wondering how the inevitable would play out, to the point that her narrative teasing at times felt forced. There's less of that here; tension builds toward the end, but "Stone Arabia" is really propelled by Spiotta's unflashy eloquence, dry wit and depth of feeling. She's an exceptional novelist, as sharp on sociopolitical history as she is on romance and family and, especially, the spaces where such things overlap.

Not every subplot and digression in "Stone Arabia" is fully realized, but the book's eschewal of neatness seems appropriate; though the writing is polished, the book has some of the idiosyncratic, improvisational feel of a great home recording. Now if only we could order the limited-edition Nik Worth boxed set.

Dylan Hicks' first novel will be published in 2012 by Coffee House Press.

STONE ARABIA

By: Dana Spiotta.

Publisher: Scribner, 235 pages, $24.

Review: Spiotta is an exceptional novelist, with dry wit and depth of feeling. This book is as sharp on history as on romance and family.

Research from P. Briggs and Co-Researchers Provides New Data on Pediatrics.

Data detailed in 'An exploratory study of Internet-initiated sexual offenses and the chat room sex offender: has the Internet enabled a new typology of sex offender' have been presented. According to recent research from Denver, United States, "This exploratory study examined 51 participants convicted of an Internet-initiated sex offense in which they attempted to entice an adolescent into a sexual relationship using an Internet chat room. All participants were convicted of a sex offense and subject to an evaluation as a part of sentencing requirements in Colorado."

"Clinical and behavioral data were obtained from each subject's offense-specific evaluation and chat room transcripts. The results of the study found that 90% of the participants were apprehended as a result of an Internet sex sting. The authors conclude that Internet chat room sex offenders constitute a separate group characterized by less severe criminogenic factors than other sex offenders (rapists, child molesters). It can be hypothesized that chat room sex offenders avoid relationships and spend a significant amount of time in online chat rooms as a primary social and sexual outlet, and engage in other sexually compulsive behaviors. Within this offender group, it was discovered that two subgroups exist: a contact-driven group motivated to engage in offline sexual behavior with an adolescent and a fantasy-driven group motivated to engage an adolescent in online cybersex without an express intent to meet offline. The chat room sex offender presents a significant clinical issue to treatment providers as a live victim does not exist. Thus, it is unclear if Internet sex stings prevent incidents of child sexual exploitation and may result in convictions of individuals who may never have abused a child," wrote P. Briggs and colleagues.

The researchers concluded: "The data suggest a tentative sex offender typology, including subtypes, which need to be replicated in future studies."

Briggs and colleagues published their study in Sexual Abuse (An exploratory study of Internet-initiated sexual offenses and the chat room sex offender: has the Internet enabled a new typology of sex offender? Sexual Abuse, 2011;23(1):72-91).

Brightree and McKesson Medical-Surgical Offer Integrated Electronic Purchasing.

Atlanta, GA (Vocus/PRWEB) April 12, 2011

Brightree LLC, the leading provider of business management solutions and billing services for the HME/DME market, and McKesson Medical-Surgical Minnesota Supply Inc. ("McKesson Medical-Surgical") announced an electronic trading agreement today. The agreement enables joint customers to place orders to the McKesson Medical-Surgical online ordering platform directly from within the Brightree system. With an integrated interface between the two systems via the Brightree ePurchasing solution, customers can dramatically reduce inventory-related costs, eliminate duplicate data entry and reduce the opportunity for human error in the purchasing process.

"As our customers are looking for every opportunity to reduce expenses and streamline business operations, they are telling us that the purchasing process is a key area they are looking to improve," said Dave Cormack, president and CEO of Brightree. "By making it easier for our customers to place drop ship orders from within a single interface, we're eliminating the time wasted with paper-based purchasing and giving providers more time to spend serving their customers."

According to Fred Browne, president of McKesson Extended Care, "This is a significant step that helps the many McKesson customers that use Brightree to automate and simplify their business processes. With access to updated product information directly from within their billing system, our customers get accurate pricing and benefit from a simplified e-purchasing process that eliminates double-keying and supply errors."

Because it is built on a web-based platform and operates on the Software as a Service (SaaS) model, Brightree billing and business management software is uniquely able to search customers' McKesson-based catalogs in real time, ensuring that all Brightree customers have instant access to the most accurate information when placing orders. When an order is placed in the Brightree system, a file is transmitted via a secure FTP connection to McKesson Medical-Surgical's online ordering system. The McKesson system then communicates back to Brightree, giving customers faster insight into their order and its delivery status. This new capability is an extended service from Brightree.

Brightree will demonstrate its new ePurchasing Program in booth #2428 at Medtrade Spring this week. It will be generally available to all Brightree-McKesson Medical-Surgical customers with Brightree Release 25, scheduled for May 2011. As December Car Sales Announced, Edmunds.com Points Out Unreliability of SAAR Metric.(Financial report)

The last ten days of December were terrific for auto sales, but it is premature to say that the economy has turned around, according to Edmunds.com, the premier resource for automotive information.

The Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate, or SAAR, has been used for decades to measure economic trends, and it is likely that December's automotive SAAR will be celebrated. However, Edmunds.com has found that SAAR is an unreliable metric during periods of economic recession. Why? Recession-era buyer psychology shifts behavior in a way that reduces the accuracy of the US Bureau of Economic Analysis' established seasonal adjustments upon which SAAR is based.

"A larger portion of the population could be classified as "bargain-hunters" during recessions, and so seasonal discounts draw far more attention than are predicted by the pre-established seasonal adjustments," asserted Edmunds.com CEO Jeremy Anwyl. "One could argue that in general, during a recession SAAR overstates automotive demand in summertime and during the December holiday season, and understates it in most of the rest of the year."

Car-shoppers have been trained to count on holiday shopping and year-end deals. Many bargain-hunting car-shoppers wait for the deals to be announced, and during a recession this triggers a lower SAAR in the autumn. This year, most automakers introduced holiday deals midway through November to extend the year-end shopping season. Consumers responded, boosting SAAR in November and December. As a result, SAAR may be deflated in the early part of 2010, since the great holiday deals likely pulled in bargain-hunting shoppers from the future.

"If early 2010 SAAR numbers are low relative to the end of 2009, SAAR may cause unnecessary concerns that the economy is not recovering as quickly as expected," warned Anwyl. "However, the next seasonal discount period - the summer - is sure to generate a significant boost in SAAR that will make everyone feel better again."

Edmunds.com's analysts researched U.S. automotive SAAR back to 1967 and found that in most years, SAAR was relatively stable, typically within five percent of actual annual sales volume. However, in times when the economy was rocked - such as 1981, 2001 and 2009 - the monthly variation from actual average sales volume varied wildly. In those years, SAAR averaged a difference of nearly ten percent from actual annual sales volume. During the current recession, monthly SAAR is averaging a difference of over 14 percent from actual annual sales volume. The largest variation on record is 37.8 percent, which occurred in August 2009 when Cash for Clunkers was in full force.

Edmunds.com analysts expect that 11.5 million cars and light trucks will be sold in 2010. About Edmunds.com Inc. (http://www.edmunds.com/help/about/)

World Series run may hurt Tigers' pitching for next season.

Byline: Mark Gonzales

DETROIT _ Some comparisons have been made between Detroit and the 2005 White Sox because of the Tigers' streaky postseason that has involved dominant pitching and timely hitting.

One factor that will bear watching, however, is how the Tigers' pitchers respond next season after a taxing but worthwhile run to the playoffs.

American League Rookie of the Year candidate Justin Verlander didn't pitch the final week of the regular season after some weariness caused by the 186 innings he pitched in his first full professional season.

A more pressing concern to the Tigers is the status of reliever Joel Zumaya's right wrist. Manager Jim Leyland ruled Zumaya out of Saturday's game, and an extended rest would be beneficial to Zumaya and the Tigers, who already have a well-equipped bullpen.

Although Zumaya threw only 831/3 innings during the regular season, this was his first full season as a reliever and the adjustment might be catching up with him.

Jeremy Bonderman (214) and Nate Robertson (2082/3) set career highs in innings, so their durability and effectiveness will be worth monitoring next season.

The Tigers, though, might be better equipped than the Sox were this year. Left-hander Mike Maroth, who threw 209 innings in 2005, will come back after missing most of 2006 because of elbow surgery.

And the Tigers have two front-line prospects in Humberto Sanchez and Andrew Miller, their first-round pick in 2006.

NEW WEBSITE PROMOTES BURMA RIGHTS AND DEMOCRACY.

(Full text of a statement. Contact details below.)

MAE SOT, Thailand & NEW DELHI, India--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 5, 2005--A new website launched today aims to aid Burma's democracy movement by opening channels of communication into one of the world's most repressive states.

The Burma Guide to Rights and Democracy, www.burmaguide.net, is designed for easy access to a collection of resources for people interested in Burma's future as a democratic country where the rights of all peoples are honored under the rule of law. News on Burma and tools for promoting a peaceful democratic transition are available in English, as well as the six different languages spoken in Burma-- Burmese, Chin, Kachin, Karen, Mon, and Shan.

The launch of BurmaGuide.Net comes on the eve of the seventeenth anniversary of the massive "8-8-88" pro-democracy uprising in Burma, when thousands of demonstrators were killed by the Burmese military junta. Today, the junta continues its repressive rule. By providing hundreds of summaries of key issues and reports that are crucial to the process of democratic transition, BurmaGuide.Net seeks to counter the junta's efforts to restrict access to information.

"Access to information is crucial for people to understand their rights, and to promote and defend them," said Aung Myo Min, executive director of the Human Rights Education Institute of Burma, an organization based on the Burmese-Thai border that has helped manage research and translation for the project. "BurmaGuide.Net offers democracy and human rights resources for different peoples of Burma to in their own languages."

The website, which is funded by the Open Society Institute and the United States Agency for International Development, was developed in cooperation with the Burma Information and Technology Team and the Human Rights Education Institute of Burma.

The Burmese language version of this site is known as "Lanpya.Net" (lanpya means "guide" in Burmese), and offers access to a new Burmese Unicode font developed by the Burma Information and Technology Team, an organization of Burmese refugees based in New Delhi that will provide technological support for the website. The Unicode font will be accessible to many types of computer systems.

"BurmaGuide.Net will be an important resource for both the Burmese Diaspora and people within Burma as internet access expands," said Maureen Aung-Thwin, director of the Open Society Institute Burma Project. "The process of creating the website and researching its content has also built new capacities among Burmese that will promote the country's future democratic and economic development."

MORNINGSERIAL.(Features)

Iwant you to be the first to know, Megan, he says. I've put the shop up for sale. Going to concentrate on the antiquarian side now. On the internet. I'm getting too long in the tooth for this lark.

I gulp.Well that's my job gone. He reads my mind. I can't envisage a quick sale, so your job's safe for a while yet. No need for you to worry. And by the end of June it'll be fresh fields and pastures new, for S you, anyway, won't it? There's a sadness in his voice that's touching. I'd never thought of Mr de Silva as old. Really old. But all of a sudden he looks it. I was going to tell him about Haggard and Daughters but just can't somehow. As I'm leaving, my mobile rings. It's Vincent.

Apparently Narcotic Crocus are stuck in the snow somewhere.

What? Their van broke down. Narcotic Crocus? Oh, of course, Zoe's art-school wonder band. I'd forgotten all about them. This means it'll be busy in the Union bar after all. When there's a gig everyone drinks in the Syndrome and that's why he'd allowed me the night off.

Now he wants me back. I tell him I'm supposed to be going to Zoe's party, knowing even as I'm saying it that I'm not being assertive enough. Still, I've got to keep well in, haven't I? I want to keep my job and there'd always be plenty of takers for it.

Yeah. She told me about that. If you just work till ten, that'll do, he says.

Bloody Zoe, I think. And guess who must've given Vincent my mobile number in the first place.

Now this is the bit that gets difficult. Writing about it, I mean. This is when the figures go off the graph and I don't want to write it down at all. It's like making it real. And for me it'll never be real.

Cursing Zoe and wondering whether I could be bothered to go to her pesky party at all, I went down the cellar steps to get a crate of mixers. She was there.

Bloody hell, just for a moment. Zoe in the flesh, sat on the floor by the big defunct dishwasher, crying, mascara running down her face, hugging her knees and rocking back and forth.
